Rubrics are a tool as well as a method for assessing assignments. They tell students how they will be graded on an assignment, what items will be graded, and what level of quality is required to earn a particular grade. As a result, rubrics make a teacher's job of grading assignments much easier by providing reliability and objectivity. The present study examines the effectiveness of using rubrics in assessing students' assignments on-line and further suggests using them as an effective assessment tool in an on-line class. Eleven students taking an English class at an online university participated in the study. They were given an assignment with a rubric as a guide. After implementing the assignment, the students graded their performances and then compared their self-evaluating with the instructor's grading. An online survey was also conducted to see how the rubric assisted the students' work and what the students thought about using the rubric as an assessment tool. The findings include that 1) the rubric had been a facilitator for the students who needed self-motivation in a distance education setting; 2) the rubric helped the students with what and how to implement; 3) the students wanted to have rubrics for all the assignments; and 4) the students thought that the instructor's evaluation by the rubric would be reliable.
