The purposes of this study were to develop the authentic open inquiry programs which were based on an epistemology of authentic science, and to investigate the effectiveness of the program. In authentic open inquiry, students may have the chance to experience the complexity, the uncertainty, and the theory-ladenness of science when they design and practice their experiments. The 9 activities were developed in a high school biology curriculum and were based on units about cells and metabolism. The samples were 86 of 10th graders in a science-high school in Seoul. The experimental groups(n=43) practiced authentic open inquiry and the control groups(n=43) practiced traditional school science inquiry in five weeks. The result shows that students' understanding of the nature of science in experimental groups was significantly enhanced compared to those in control groups. Most students in the experimental groups responded positively to authentic open inquiry activities. We also found that many students have difficulties in generating research questions, identifying and controlling variables, and inferencing and generalizing results.
