In this study high school students and college freshmen who had taken prior genetics and evolution courses were asked to solve problems about heredity and natural selection. And their understanding of genetics and evolution were explored.
Students were shown to have difficulties in understanding genetics because of its abstract property. The basic concepts of genetics such as gene, DNA, chromosome were not understood and recognized as ‘matter'. In particular, randomness and probability of genetic factors resulting in the distribution of genetic traits were not recognized.
Students didn't understand that concepts of genetic mutations and intraspecies variability are related and that intraspecies variability is a prerequisite for natural selection. Instead, they explained the evolutionary process by ‘need' for individuals to adapt and survive the environment. These causal or goal-directed explanation contains the event attributes of ontological category rather than equilibration.
