The purpose of this study was to analyze the prize-winning works in the life science field of national science fair, and examine characteristics of high school student research activities. 221 works won the prize during eleven years(2006-2016) were collected, and analyzed according to categories of academic area, research forms and student activity characteristics. The proportion of works was the most in physiology according to academic area, and molecular biology and cell biology has appeared recently. High school students used higher level of equipment than that of general high school levels, and these trends are gradually deepening. There were most studies conducted by universities or research institutes, and were lower proportions of student self-directed research. Thus, it is expected for them to have difficulties to research in general high school schools, and high school students considerably need the help of a teacher or an expert. The results of this study suggested that there should provide an environment in which students can participate in self-directed research activities in general high schools. There is needed teacher training to lead students for researchers, and experimental equipments so that students can research smoothly related to science in general high schools.
