The purpose of this study was to investigate that the effect of multi-axis sling suspension exercise on trunk muscle activation in young and healthy subjects. Twenty-nine collegiate students (25.1±4.9 yr) were voluntarily participated in this study. All subjects performed 8 different exercises, and surface electromographic activity was recorded from rectus abdominis muscle, external obliquus muscle, thoracic erector spinae muscle, and multifidus muscle. Average electromyographic amplitudes obtained during the exercises were normalized to the amplitude in maximal voluntary isometric contraction(%MVIC) to produce inter-individually comparable muscle activity assessments. Muscle activities (comparisons made by %MVIC) were significantly different from among exercise modes(p<.05). In both rectus abdominis and external obliquus, Exercise 1 showed the highest degree of muscle activity than all other flexion exercise modes(Exercise 2, 3, 4). In aspects of extensor muscles, Exercise 5 and 6 showed a significantly higher activation rate in both thoracic erector spinae muscle and multifidus muscle than Exercise 7 and 8. There were no statistical differences in muscle activation between Exercise 5 and Exercise 6, and between Exercise 7 and Exercise 8. Interestingly, muscle activation rate was not significantly different in between thoracic erector spinae and multifidus muscle when Exercise 5 and 6 were performed, while it was significantly higher in multifidus muscle compared to thoracic erector spinae when Exercise 7 and 8 were carried out. Based on these results, it was concluded that specifically designed exercise should be applied to different muscles if abdominal and back muscle strength enhancement is major concern and multi-axis sling suspension unit can be safely used for improving of muscle strength in specific muscles.
