This paper examines a new instruction model for Korean undergraduates in intermediate and advanced Chinese language courses. This model uses digital storytelling and aims to improve students’ ability to speak Chinese. Modern Chinese language education in Korea seeks to help students express themselves creatively and communicate effectively. This is a shift from traditional methods, which focused on grammar. The teaching materials in modern Chinese conversation classes have some weaknesses. First, the speaking materials are standardized and uniform; second, the Chinese Chines translations are monotonous; third, the conversation topics and contents focus partially on everyday life and culture; and finally, there are no teaching guides for conversation classes. To compensate for these limitations, this paper recommends the use of digital storytelling. Four methods for using digital storytelling in conversation classes are described in this paper. First, a story concept can be designed using Chinese characters; second, the story’toplot can be linked to the original meanings of the Chinese characters; third, a story can be developed based on a picture book and then presented; and fourth, classical Chinese stories can be re-told in modern Chinese.
