Korea and Spain have many things in common in terms of geopolitics,historical experiences, and cultures. Both countries were attacked and colonized so many times by neighboring countries and have accomplished the modern society under military dictatorship. And also both countries’ film histories were not mentioned, dealt with, or studied in many books for the history of world cinema. Those common things give a good reason to study the history of cinema in both countries and compare with each other. In this paper, the history of spanish cinema under Franco regime was analyzed and discussed with a hope that the comparison of both countries’ film history under military dictatorship in each countries will be accomplished in other research. The reason that spanish films under Franco regime were selected for the discussion in this paper is mainly because Spain started its modernization through this period and also many remarkable spanish films and film directors showed up in this period. Spanish cinema started its own neorealism under the military dictatorship and for that reason, it was not easy for the spanish film directors to express spanish neorealism as free as in Italy. Censorship from the military government and Catholic churches used to suffocate the freedom of expression but there still were the directors who could find their way to go around the censorship by making surrealism movies and black comedies and metaphoric movies. The creativity of some spanish film directors during the military dictatorship were much beyond the poor imagination and the ignorance on filmic expression of censors. The study on the tendencies of spanish cinema under Franco regime will give a clue to many film researchers on how films can be made when the society is not politically free and economically poor.
