It is generally accepted that the structure of "Grace" in Joyce's Dubliners is similar to that of Dante's Divine Comedy. However, under detailed scrutiny it becomes clear that the story of "Grace" is in line with the "Book of Job" in the Bible. In "Grace," Joyce seems to parody the great scenario of 'Sin-Fall-Redemption by Grace' in the Bible by minimizing the sequence into a series of trivial accidents; 'falling down on a lavatory-rescued by a friend-going to a secularized retreat.' However, comparing the two stories on the basis of Bakhtin's concept of chronotope, the readers can see the intertextuality of both stories. The chronotope here means a combination of a specific time and space in a literary work, which works as a sort of plot in the work. The chronotope has a specific structure and significance, by which the genre of a work and the characteristics of a hero can be defined. In the course of interpretation, the intertextuality of chronotopes in the literary works sometimes betrays the authorial intention, revealing a hidden unconsciousness of the author. The chronotope of grace in the "Book of Job" helps us see the present situation of the 'gnomonic grace' in Dublin in Joyce's "Grace." It also manifests that the grace in a real sense is not merely justification of their 'own grace,' or any apparent change in their behaviors but an absolute present from God in heaven. In addition, it also reveals the unconsciousness of the author, who, seemingly ridiculing and criticizing the paralyzed, gnomonic situations in Dublin, eagerly hopes to overcome indifference and ego-centricism and recover the unconditional love shown in the acts of the young man in a "cycling suit," who takes care of an endangered other like the 'good Samaritan.'
