Matheson’s I am Legend published in 1954 is regarded as “the milestone in modern gothic fiction” which attempts to link vampire mythology to science fiction because it interprets the vampire as a disease carrier instead of a Gothic monster. The main purpose of this novel is not to reveal the source and danger of vampirism which broke out as the effect of a nuclear war, but to (re)interpret the literal and symbolic meanings of Dracula, Stoker’s vampire, who many critics since 1970s have regarded as a symbol for Otherness. Matheson, however, already anticipated and suggested the possibility of the vampires as the symbol for Others which are believed to threaten society. Matheson’s revolutionary interpretation of the vampire, however, lies in his reversal of “man and vampires”. That is, Neville, the narrator of I am Legend, who has regarded himself as the only normal human being, comes to realize that “monstrosity is a matter of point of view”, and that he is a real vampire to the vampires whom he has regarded as “anathema and black terror to be destroyed.” The novel ends with Neville’s realizing his status as legend/ vampire, inverting the “notions of good and evil, Otherness and the monster.”
