Dracula is a repository of uncensored human desire which should not be accepted and included in the world. And the symbolic law condenses all of the unacceptable traits of the late Victorian society, such as the advent of New Woman, sexual immorality, and crisis of patriarchy into the figure of Dracula; this awareness of crisis is, in turn, displaced into the hostility toward Dracula. Thus the Name-of-the-Father in the Symbolic Order keeps giving it an eviction notice and trying to take it away from the symbolic world. As Dracula appears and disappears, it resurfaces how absurd and irrational the notice is. This novel also puts up two female subjects, Lucy and Mina. In the process of vampire slaying, they imply and articulate the lack of the symbolic world and serve to raise a question, `Who is mad?`
The Lacanian Real is also the excluded part of the Symbolic Order, and it `it ex-sists` to the symbolic world. When the linguistic order fails to signify the subjects, the Real appears and reveals the hidden cracks inside the solid hegemonic world, that is, the Law. The Law interdicts the subjects from pursuing their desire, but Lacan insists `Never forgo the desire` and manifests it as an ethics of psychoanalysis. Mina and Lucy both encounter traumatic real and struggle with the real; especially Mina inexorably seeks her own desire.
Dracula does not totally abrogate the order of the symbolic law-patriarchal society and phallogocentrism, since all human beings are the results of signification of the Symbolic Order and language. But Mina and Lucy highlight the violence and irrationality of Van Helsing and show us a subtle subversion in the hegemonic world. Mina, who is the embodiment of Lacan` femininity, opens up the possibility to lay bare the absurdity of the patriarchal society just as the Real ruptures the solid structure of the Symbolic Order.
