This paper examines the ethical elements of sympathetic imagination in the texts of Virginia Woolf and J. M. Coetzee. Their texts commonly offer an insight into the injustice of war and patriarchy. This essay argues that sympathetic imagination in Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Coetzee’s Disgrace serves to expand the sense of community beyond the boundaries of gender, race, class, and nation, thereby taking our life to a more creative force and making it fulfilled in peaceful coexistence. However, the imaginative characters in their novels fail to empathize and communicate with the Others. These failures cause the characters to experience a sense of closure, along with guilt and disgrace at the end of the stories. It is true that such endings show one of the ultimate limits of sympathetic imagination manifested in the characters and yet in so doing, the authors invite readers to raise the philosophical question, “Is it possible to understand the Other fully?” This question has the ethical significance in making the readers aware that the fullest possible exercise of sympathetic imagination can help them to transform an unfair society into a fair one, and to find ways to coexist with the Others.
