Present study examined eye movements process when students with severe hearing impairment viewing captioned TV program. Eye movements of 11 junior high school students with severe hearing impairments and two hearing peers were recorded while they watched captioned TV programs.
Their visual focus was divided into two parts; image viewing and caption reading. The ratio of caption-reading time to total reading time was 30 to 40% of total viewing time. No clear differences were found among three groups of students with higher or lower reading ability, and hearing students. The students could locate a changed new caption 0.2 to 0.3 s after its appearance on the display. An analysis of eye moments during caption reading revealed that the caption reading process was similar to that in text reading but that captions proved to be a little more difficult than printed text.
