The purpose of the present study is to investigate how the expenses of English shadow education by Korean adolescents are related with their English academic achievement and their level of understanding in English class. The relationship is further complexified by our factoring into the equation students’ family income and their planning to enter special-purposed high schools. The key to this study is the use of a powerful analysis method, a multivariate latent growth modeling approach, using the data from Korean Education Longitudinal Study (KELS). For this study, 6,908 students’ data drawn from KELS were analyzed in order to inspect how changes in English tutoring expenditure exerted an influence on changes in the students’ English achievement and their perceived understanding in English class over four different moments in time. Results showed that the students’ initial spending on English shadow education was correlated with their initial state of English academic achievement and understanding level in English class. Also, the students’ family income and their academic planning affected their expenditure for English shadow education, which in turn correlated with their English academic achievement and the degree of understanding in English class.
