A new covered barley variety, aeyeonbori was developed from the cross between Milyangketbori, a stabile formachine harvest, and Olbori by the barley breeding team in the National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station (NYAES) in1999. An elite line, YB 3625-3B-9-2-1, was selected in 1996. It was designated as the name of Milyang 94. It had good perfor-mance in the regional adaptation yield trials (RAT) from 1997 to 1999 and was released as the name of aeyeonbori. aeyeo-nborihas lodging resistance and moderate resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus and powdery mildew. The average headingdate of aeyeonbori was similar to Olbori but its maturing date was earlier than Olbori by two days in paddy field conditionsduring 1997-1999. aeyeonbori is 3 cm shorter than Olbori in paddy of regional trials and spike length is 4.0 cm, it's similar toOlbori. The 1,000 grain weight was 1.7 g havier than Olbori but the number of spikes per m2 was les productive than that ofOlbori. The yield potential of aeyeonbori was 3.93 MT/ha in upland and 3.79 MT/ha in paddy of regional trials during 1997-1999, this was 8%, 6% higher than that of Olbori, respectively. The grain quality components of aeyeonboriwere similar tothose of Olbori in ash content, pearled grain rate and water absorption rate but content of b-glucan was lower of Olbori. The con-tent of starch, whiteness of pearled and diastatic power were higher than those of Olbori which is good for edible. This variety issuitable for double cropping system with rice in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
