This essay aims to reexamine discourses on the identity of Korean dance from a poststructuralist view, and to provide critical vision of the discourses for the 21th century. I argue that the discourses are socially, historically constructed. I do not intend to establish another standard for the discourses. Rather, I reveal a paradox which the discourses include. That is, if the discourses take more nationalist views, based on a binary premise that the West is universal and the non-West is particular, they will reinforce Western-centered thought and Orientalism. I historicize the discourses in the context of modernity, nationalism and Orientalism. In chapter II, I discuss what poststructuralism is and how it provides research questions for reexamining the discourses. In chapter III, I review the discourses, written by four dance scholars. In chapter IV, I argue that the discourses were written in the schema of co-figuration of the West and the East as Naoki Sakai calls. And then I argue that the discourses have a nationalist view because they reconstruct Korean identity by emphasizing the uniqueness and superiority of Korean culture. But some of their arguments reproduce Orientalism as Yanagi Muneyoshi argues. In chapter V, I suggest critical considerations for the future study.
