Dance criticism plays important roles in the dance education. The common practice for dance criticism in colleges is to give class assignments of critiquing dance performances. This practice may be considered as a useful method for students to get trained eyes for dance pieces and have more dance experiences. However, dance students usually do not possess dance background enough to observe, analyse, interpret and evaluate dance performances in a appropriate manner. That means, without helpful guidelines how to observe and review dance performances, it is really difficult for students to carry out the assignments of writing dance criticism properly. The purpose of this study is to provide a practice method for dance writing which could be used directly in dance criticism related courses. The proposed method is based on a theoretical model of dance criticism as well as an analytical survey of dance reviews and interviews with professional critics. The developed method to practice dance reviews in class may be summarized as follows. First, in terms of discussion types, interpretation is more emphasized than evaluation. Second, because students possess little dance background, the subjects of dance discussion should be focused primarily on choreography. Dancers in performance may be treated secondly. Third, in terms of the process of dance writing,, discussion in the observation stage has not been used importantly by professional critics. However discussion is emphasized in the practice model as a way to enhance students' abilities of dance perception. Fourth, as a practical way used in the observation and discussion stage, viewing a video and discussion may be exercised before attending and reviewing a specific performance. The proposed method to practice dance writings is expected to help students enhance their abilities of creative and critical analysis.
