This study examined vocabulary learning strategies of two KFL (Korean as a Foreign Language) learners in a U.S. college setting. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, a vocabulary learning task, think-aloud protocols, and stimulate recall. The analysis focused on identifying the kinds of strategies the participants employ when encountering unfamiliar words and the factors related to their choice and use of vocabulary learning strategies. The participants’ strategies were classified into two groups: (1) strategies to discover the meaning of unknown words and (2) strategies to consolidate and retain the words. The results indicated that the participants’ use of or preference for certain strategies was associated with individual learner factors such as past learning experience, metacognitive awareness, perceived L2 proficiency, L2 curriculum and assessment, and L1/heritage background.
