Kim is almost the only Korean Poet who expressed religious imagination in his whole poems. He was a son of Christian priest and trained as a Christian since his childhood. His poems are generally composed with a prayer and his deep self consciousness of solitude. His religious poems first can be compared to G. M. Hopkins, a British poet. In his religious life Hopkins had been in deep agony and struggle and spoke his resentment to God who had done no justice to the corrupted world.
Kim fell in deep skepticism about his Christian religion in his early 50s and it succeeded in deep solitude which was expressed in “Absolute Solitude,” a climax in his poetic career. But his poems don’t speak of his resentment to God like Hopkins. Kim is similar to Rilke who expressed God which cover and wrap His followers softly. Kim is Christian but he is also brought up in Confucian mood of Korea. He could not resent or argue to his high senior God. Kim’s prayer and solitude is a kind of Korean style Christianism.
