Purpose: Previous studies showed that women’s sport is greatly underreported and trivialized in newspapers. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the portrayals of Korean male and female athletes in media coverage. Research questions were (1) how media describe female athletes in comparison to male athletes and (2) how conservative news media describe female athletes comparing to progressive media.
Methods: Using Python’s text mining, the raw data were extracted from the news articles relating to big-name Korean sports figures (two male and female each) including Yu-na Kim (Olympic medalist in figure skating), Tae-hwan Park (Olympic medalist in swimming), Yeon-jae Sohn (rhythmic gymnastics), and Heung-min Son (Soccer player in the premier league). A number of news articles from 2000 to 2017 were used as data (e.g., N=59606 for Y Kim, N=27165 for T Park, N=20262 for Y Sohn, and N=43350 for H Son). Data were analyzed using social network analysis tools such as UCINET. The semantic network analysis was conducted and visualized using the Pajek program.
Results: Analysis of network centrality (e.g. degree, betweenness, and closeness), density, and strong components showed that regardless of gender, performance-related words such as performance, Olympic, or winning showed high in centrality index. In addition, conservative media focused on the soft news in which words like boyfriend and dating were ranked high (e.g., fourth and sixth) in indegree centrality while progressive media focused on the hard news (e.g, winning, champion, performance). Semantic network analysis was discussed to improve content analysis used in previous research.
Conclusions: The results of this study showed that both male and female athlete were revered and praised for their athletic achievements. This study concluded that media coverages in Korean new papers did not portray male and female athletes differently in terms of masculinity or femininity using sexist framing. This study identifies a far greater diversity of media representations of female athletes that have been claimed in previous studies and thus future research needs to focus more on the exploration of different cultural contexts.
