The characteristic of the Xikun-style Poetry is among other things, its pursuit of formal beauty. Therefore, it can be inferred that the Latter Xikun-style Poetry that followed the Xikun-style Poetry also sought formal beauty. Under this assumption, this paper is part of the study to find out the relationship between the Xikun-style Poetry and the Latter Xikun-style Poetry. This paper compared Xikun-style Poetry’s Seven-Character Poems with the writer of the Latter Xikun-style Poetry ― Yan Shu’s Seven-Character Poems in terms of core elements of the Modern-style Poetry ― rhyme scheme of level and obligue tones and the rhymes. Both of them inherit Tang Dynasty poetry, but on the other hand, they tried to create a distinguishing feature of the Song Dynasty poetry from it as a Song Dynasty poet. Their attempts at breaking rules and changes is meaningful that they have laid the foundation for the Song Dynasty poetry, because of its association with the characteristics of the Song Dynasty poetry. But from a comparative point of view, Yan Shu’s Seven-Character Poems has made more aggressive attempts at breaking news than Xikun-style Poetry’s Seven-Character Poems, it can be understood that this reflected the social background of the time.
