This paper investigates the diachronic evolution of the verbs of “Shake off”. To express the concept of “shake off”，“拂”(fu)、“抖”(dou)、“掸”(dan) is used from ancient times till modern times. “拂”(fu) is the main used from ancient times to Yuan Dynasty. “抖”(dou) emerged in Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties and took over “拂”(fu)"s place.
Since then, “抖”(dou) has turned into the dominant word for the concept of “shake off” from Ming and Qing Dynasties till modern times. “掸”(dan) emerged in Qing Dynasty but It had declined due to had lost to “抖”(dou) in the competition. This paper investigates the usage of members in the semantic field from ancient times to Qing Dynasty and analyzes the historical replacement of “拂”(fu)、“掸”(dan) with “抖”(dou) as well as its causes.
