This is a comparative study of the poems written by the Korean poet Ungok (birth name Woncheonseok) and the Chinese poet, Hansan. Ungok was active from the late Goreyo dynasty to the early Joseon dynasty. Hansan was active during the Tang dynasty. Most of the satirical tendencies from poems written by both Ungok and Hansan’s are similar, however contrast is discovered when taking a deeper look into the details. In other words, the contents of Ungok’s satirical poems are somewhat wider and more diverse than those of Hansan’s satirical poems. The satirical poems by Hansan contain more of an instructive nature, similar to the wisdom given in Buddhism. The satirical poems of Ungok are more realistic and more lively than the ones of Hansan. Also, in the case of Hansan’s secular poems, the range of the material is very wide and it is also very diverse. However, Hansan’s secular range is centered on himself. The range of Hansan’s poems is very narrow, focused, and limited, compared to Ungok’s writings. Additionally, Ungok wrote as an aristocrat this is noticed by taking a closer look at Ungok’s poetry, one can see there is a written style to the literature, it also holds a strong spirit of Confucianism. Whereas, Hansan’s poetry was written in more of a popular language so it was popular among commoners of the time.
