This study examines the correlation between birth order among siblings and passing the civil exam of Joseon Korea, the definitive way of social success. Interestingly, in my data, the eldest never had advantages in passing the exam in any situation from the 17th century to the early 19th century. Especially, there are no distinct gaps between siblings among powerful families, because all brothers inherited properties enough to study for exam passing even they shared family properties in different by birth order. After 1730, the only sons began to ahead those who had siblings in the average age of the exam passing. However, the burdens as the only heir of the family made the only sons give up the exam earlier than the others. The result of this study shows that the family culture and system of Joseon did not guarantee the eldest or the only son"s social success. The images of inequalities between brothers and the sacrifices of their brothers, and the famous folktale Heungbujeon, may not be a reflection of the actual family culture and society of traditional Korea.
