Instead of concentrating on the nationalist credentials of the YMCA during the colonial period, this article looks beyond a myopic political interpretation of the YMCA in order to capture the real relevance of this Christian social movement. Rather than its religious credentials, the social aspects of the YMCA programs, in particular its rural development program, are highlighted here.
Dropping its urban bias, the Korean YMCA opted in 1925 for a rural development scheme. Soon other organizations followed the YMCA example. The YMCA program distinguished itself from other initiatives in its international dimension. Not only did it rely on American advisors to develop and implement the program, it also sent its own delegates on international observation missions. Denmark served as the model for the YMCA. Agricultural reform had allowed Denmark to prosper in the capitalist world order despite relying on an agricultural economy. The Danish example taught that not only crop improvement and the development of subsidiary industries, but also the establishment of cooperatives and, on an individual level, an ethical regeneration were crucial for the resuscitation of the rural economy.
With the majority of Koreans living in the countryside, YMCA leaders were convinced that securing the livelihood of Korean farmers was equal to saving the nation from annihilation. This understanding, however, did not alter their acceptance of the colonial political order.
