Christian education should continue work of Jesus Christ for liberation, restoration, and reformation here and now through the Holy Spirit. However, patriarchal churches have often restrained women under burdensome restriction and perpetuated their victimization by maintaining status-quo through education. In this study, we will investigate the case of Mary Magdalene, who was one of the most outstanding and faithful disciples and apostles. In Church history, theological expositions of her has swung from apostle and leader to harlot, to sinful penitent and back to admired saint. After a series of sermons of Pope Gregory I around 591 A.D., the erroneous belief of Mary Magdalene as a repented prostitute or promiscuous woman had been widespread. These days, Mary Magdalene is recognized as a saint and the "apostle to the apostles" by the Catholic and Protestant churches. Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza insists that the distortion of Mary Magdalene has been harmful to both the tradition and to contemporary Christian women. In this study, by examining the apocryphal literatures as well as the canonical literatures about Mary Magdalene, we will attempt to comprehend how interpretations of the Scriptures can be misused and religious traditions can be distorted and selectively transmitted. Uncritical reproduction of the existing theology of the dominant group can perpetuate oppression and victimization of the marginalized people. For transformation, Christian educators should develop counter-hegemony and reconstruct the superstructure which can replace existing discriminative ones. The current study will contribute not only to recovering the individual case of Mary Magdalene but also to reestablishing the female leadership and apostleship in the Ecclesiastical organization.
