The purpose of this study is to investigate how English-speaking children between ages 1 and 4 use more, which has different grammatical categories: Determiner, Noun, Adverb, and Comparative Marker. It is planned to find out how frequently children produce different grammatical categories of more and how their production of more is distributed in different types of utterances in the beginning of their language production. Children’s utterances were classified as one-word utterances, multi-word utterances, phrases, and sentences. The morphologically tagged CHILDES databases from America and Britain are analyzed. The results showed the slots of ‘more+(X)/(X)+more’ in multi-word utterances were filled with various types of words especially with names, numbers, manner, and conjunctions. The proportions of more used by children are in the order of Determiner, Noun, and Adverb, reflecting that the usages were related to children’s content word use, especially nouns and verbs. Children produced simpler patterns before or simultaneously with complex ones as they extended the patterns: 1- and 2-year-old children used one-word or multi-word utterances frequently, while 3- and 4-year-old children tended to produce phrases and sentences.
