This paper aims to reexamine the grammatical number and the notional number manifested on both nouns and verbs based on the principle of quantitative iconicity and the theory of subjectivity. The nominal grammatical number shows three patterns in form: singular, plural, and generic, while the verb number is confined to the singular and plural contrast and is more constrained by person and tense. Theoretically, nominal grammatical markings seem to be generally compatible with an iconic feature. In contrast, the verbal grammatical number that shows opposite markings is probably due to the subjective construal of entity involvement in the conception. On the other hand, three-way nominal notional number-neutral, singular, and plural-is in stark contrast with the two-way verbal notional number-singular and plural. It is argued that nominal notional number is dynamic and flexible in that it can be applied to all types of nouns, whereas the verbal notional number seems to be more compatible with the feature of a morphological complexity and is thus more iconic.
