The current study identified the mediating roles of career-related support and achievement motivation in the relationships between married immigrant women’s parenting efficacy and middle school children’s perceived career barriers. This study also explored children’s sex differences in the structural relationships among married immigrant women’s parenting efficacy, career-related support, children’s achievement motivation, and perceived career barriers. The data of this study was taken from the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study, which included 1,176 3rd-grade middle school children (males: 580, females: 596) and foreign mothers. Structural equation modeling and multiple group analyses revealed that foreign mothers’ career-related support and children’s achievement motivation individually and sequentially mediated the relationships between mothers’ parenting efficacy and children’s perceived career barriers. Furthermore, multiple group analysis showed that the effect of mothers’ parenting efficacy on children’s achievement motivation was greater for female children than for male children, whereas the effect of mothers’ career-related support on children’s perceived career barriers was greater for male children than for female children. Finally, the current study proposed future improvements for parental education in order to enhance foreign mothers’ parenting efficacy and to facilitate stronger career-related support which would further decrease adolescent children’s perceived career barriers. This study also suggested the necessity of linking schools to related organizations in the local community in order to increase the effectiveness of parental education for multicultural families.
