Owing to plastic’s multi-functionalities such as lightweight, processability, and reasonable price, plastic materials have been used in various manufacturing industries. It is undeniable that increasing demand for different commodities produced by plastic materials has been noticed among consumers. As each one has its pros and cons, this rising demand for plastic products also may lead to environmental pollutants as it generates plastic solid waste(PSW), thus creating new trials. This paper gives an overview of cutting-edge technologies of recycling and expectations towards the future situation by exploiting well-known polymers such as polyolefins, poly(vinyl chloride), polyurethane, and poly(ethylene terephthalate) as examples. On top of that, a different method of PSW (i.e. Primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary) recycling and progress was discussed in this review paper as well as various identification and separation technologies. Finally, the applications of different types of recyclates with various reinforcements are also mentioned. However, the global introduction of waste utilization technologies to the plastic market is currently not developed enough but has tremendous potential.
