Brassica napus is a globally important oilseed crop. B. napus, a hybrid species, is an allotetraploid composed of two subgenomes originating from Brassica rapa and Brassica oleracea. The presence of two highly similar subgenomes has made the creation of a complete draft genome difficult. The high degree of similarity between the subgenomes increases the difficulty of untangling the two subgenomes and allows for the process of homoeologous exchange, the exchange of genetic material between two homeologs, to occur further increasing the genetic variation of the species.
