Defense industry plays a key role in strengthening national security. While one of the most effective ways of promoting the defense industry is expanding arms exports, the heated competition in the global defense market makes it difficult to increase arms export volume.
The purpose of this research is to propose the arms export strategies based on ROK-U.S. cooperation. A SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat) analysis is performed to identify internal and external environmental factors in regards to such strategies. Twenty environmental factors are presented in the analysis which are divided into eight groups depending on the correlation to each factor.
Eight strategies for expanding defense export based on ROK-U.S. cooperation is established in this study. It also improves the SWOT analysis to draw up concrete strategies through grouping the matrix of environmental factors. To assume dominance in the ever-competitive global defense market, the research suggests that the ROK and U.S. should transform the defense industrial relationship from a one-sided to a mutually beneficial partnership. The new partnership should be led by the industries with the help of the respective governments. I hope the proposed strategies would contribute to promoting arms export of both countries based on strong defense industrial cooperation, ultimately strengthening the ROK-U.S. alliance.
