The equivocal ending of 『The Catcher in the Rye(1951)』, where Holden returns to his home after all, has been a hot issue among a lot of critics and readers. In fact most of them have regarded its finishing as a failure or a tragedy. This study tried to contradict the opinions from the point of Taoism. It focuses on Salinger"s three works, 「A Perfect Day for Bananafish(1948)」, 『The Catcher in the Rye(1951)』, 「De Daumier-Smith"s Blue Period(1952)」, and draws its conclusion by comparing the finish of his only long novel with those of the short stories left.
As the result, Holden"s returning home, the ending of 『The Catcher in the Rye』, can be considered positive, not tragic. Holden"s problems are the result of dualistic Western thought in which the ideal world is superior to the real world. The ideal world, however, is a conceptual and fictional place. It exists only in our thought. Holden"s efforts to find the ideal world called "rye field" were already destined to fail. It was Holden"s dramatic change of thought that he did not give up despite failures unlike Salinger"s other heroes. The repeated failures helped him newly recognize Taoism in part. Taoism is different from Western thought in that it disputes the eternally unchangeable world. It says there exists only the actual world we live our everyday lives. We should find Tao in our ordinary places. Accordingly, Holden"s last choice of returning home, instead of continuing the adventure for "rye field", is not a frustration or a halfway-compromise. His going home can be accepted as the result of his newly recognized Taoism as well as the beginning of flight for the ultimate reality.
