Before modern times, Mungyeong (聞慶) was a very important area. Mungyeong was an important border point in Silla (新羅). In addition, Wanggeon(王建)’s portrait was kept at the temple in Mungyeong. Mungyeong was a place with both accessibility and isolation. Although Mungyeong is surrounded by rugged Sobaek Mountains, it is possible to access Chungcheong-do directly through certain hills. These geographical features of Mungyeong have very important military implications.
During the Joseon Dynasty, Mungyeong was not only a bridgehead connecting Gyeongsang-do and Chungcheong-do, but also a very important military hub for the inner defense of Gyeongsang-do and Gyeongsang-Jwa-do. Joseon authorities established a Jingwan cheje(鎭管體制) to defend the sea and land. Under such a military system, Mungyeong became a very important place for inland defense. In addition, Moon Gyeong-hyeongams military command was increased. However, the existing military system failed to function properly and was reorganized into a Jeseung bangnyak cheje(制勝方略體制). This reorganization of the military system reduced Mungyeong’s military role.
After the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, Mungyeong was an important northward route for the Japanese army and a base for the rear troops. The Mungyeong Sajok(士族) raised righteous army against the Japanese army. They formed an allied force, formed an organization, and defeated the Japanese army. They worked closely with other righteous army leaders in Gyeongsang-do to carry out righteous army activities. They engaged in righteous army activities across Gyeongsangu-do and Gyeongsangjwa-do.
Meanwhile, records of the righteous army generals who were active in the Mungyeong area were excavated. This record illustrates the activities of righteous army in the Mungyeong area during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. It is expected that the excavation of these materials will further expand the scope of research on the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.
