This study makes conceptual contributions by assessing the predictive intent of tourist motivation models, namely Plog (1974)’s psychographics model and Cohen (1972)’s sociological model, by evaluating their methodological applicability for predicting destination lifecycles in tourism systems characterized by high uncertainty, and by discussing how these models should be used in a way that is consistent with their theoretical foundations. This study contributes to theory building and the adaption of existing theories by establishing conceptual linkages between the predictive features of these models and manifestations of tourist behaviour in terms of destination choice, reaction to distance, and repeat visitation, and interpret such behaviours in a novel way as uncertainty factors for the development planning of tourism destinations. The design of this conceptual study is based on methodological considerations for theory building discussed in MacInnis (2011). This study highlights the theoretical predictive shortcomings of tourist motivation models and their limited use as models to predict destination lifecycles and tourism demand. A conclusion and implication are that these models are suitable for explaining travel aspirations rather than actual tourism movements, and destination lifecycle models and planning require a different modelling paradigm that account for the inherent and heightened uncertainty of tourism systems.
