The first aim of this study is to explain and discuss travel motivation frameworks constructed by Cohen (1972), Plog (1974) and Pearce (1988). The second study purpose is to describe the linkage of these three frameworks with destination choice, distance decay and first-time visitation. The reason to build those study goals is because the travel motivation concept that traveler’s motivation is caused by two categories which are intrinsic attributes of individuals and the situational characteristics of tourist destination have received some criticism. In this regard, there have been further efforts for several researchers to search for another significant motivation factors linked to the travel patterns and destination choice (e.g., Dann, 1981; Crompton, 1979; Goeldner & Ritchie, 2006). Among them, the representative frameworks are ‘strangeness-familiarity’ by Cohen (1972), ‘travel personality from the psychographic profile of visitors’ by Plog (1974) and travel career ladder and lifecycle stage by Pears (1988). As a result, this study theoretically discussed unique features and weaknesses of each framework, and correlations with destination choice, distance decay and first-time visitation. Finally, several theoretical recommendations and future directions were proposed based on the findings. The study results and implications were suggested at the discussion part.
