Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship among quality of life, psychological need satisfaction & frustration, and the empowering & disempowering motivational climate in swimming participants.
Method: For the study, the swimmers (N=240) who participated in swimming were recruited and asked to complete self-reported questionnaires to assess the quality of life, psychological need satisfaction & frustration, and empowering & disempowering motivational climate. Descriptive statistics, reliability (i.e., Cronbach α), confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis were used in this study.
Results: The primary findings indicated that empowering coach had a meaningful direct relation with satisfaction of psychological need whereas disempowering coach had a meaningful direct relation with frustration of psychological need. Satisfaction of psychological need also was directly and positively related with quality of life, while frustration of psychological need was directly and negatively related with quality of life.
Conclusion: Overall, the results suggest that the empowering of coach (social factor) and psychological need satisfaction will influence the degree to which an individual enhances quality of life. Whereas the disempowering of coach and psychological need frustration will influence the degree to which an individual declines quality of life in the sport context.
