거란대자 연구는 거란소자 연구나 거란어, 거란 역사, 거란 문화 연구에 중요하다. 그러나 거란대자 자료가 많지도 않은 데다가 자료에 대한 접근도 제한되어 있어 연구에 애로사항이 많다. 현재까지 알려진 거란대자 자료는 묘지명, 묵서 등의 자료가 20여개 있으며 기타 자료로 60여개의 자료가 있다. 그러나 거란대자 자료는 지금도 꾸준히 발견되고 있어 이 숫자는 늘어날 것으로 보인다. 거란대자는 처음 제정될 때 3,000여자 정도가 제정되었다고 알려져 있는데 이체자도 다수가 포함되어 있어 실제 숫자는 줄어들 수도 있다. 현재 거란대자 이체자에 대한 분석은 초보적인 단계인데 거란소자, 여진문자, 한자와의 비교를 통하여 이체자를 더 줄일 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 그리고 거란대자는 표의성을 가진 음절병음문자로 파악하고 있으며 최근 연구에서 음소성을 가진 글자들도 나타난다. 거란대자의 음가 추정은 현재 240여자가 이루어졌으니 문자 수에 비하면 10% 정도 분석된 것이다. 향후 한자 묘지명과의 비교, 거란 역사와 대조 작업, 여진 문자와의 비교 등을 통하여 더 많은 문자를 분석할 수 있을 것이다. 거란대자 연구를 심화시키기 위해서는 기존에 밝혀진 거란대자 어휘를 색인화 하는 작업이 필요하다. 거란대자의 문법 형태 분석은 시작단계이다. 거란소자에 대한 문법 형태 연구도 아직은 부족하지만 그나마 거란소자의 문법 형태가 일부 밝혀져 있어 이를 토대로 지속적인 분석이 이루어진다면 더 많은 거란대자 문법 형태들을 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 거란대자는 거란소자에 비하면 연구인력이나 연구자료가 적은 편이다. 그것은 거란문자 연구가 거란소자부터 비롯된 것도 있지만 기본적으로 거란대자는 음소문자가 아닌 음절문자에 가까워 해독이 쉽지 않은 편이다. 또 한문(漢文) 지식이 없으면 접근하기가 쉽지 않은 문자의 특징 때문에 더욱 그렇다. 그러나 앞으로 거란대자의 관련자료가 보완되고 거란소자 연구가 심화되면 거란대자 해독이 이루어질 날도 멀지 않았을 것으로 믿는다.

The study of the Khitan Large Scripts is important for the study of the Khitan Small Scripts, Khitan language, Khitan history, and Khitan culture. However, there are not many data on the Khitan Large Scripts, and access to the data is limited, so there are many difficulties in the study. There are about 20 materials such as the Epitaph and Mural letter, and about 60 other materials. However, data of the Khitan Large Scripts are still being discovered steadily, so this number is expected to increase. When the Khitan Large Scripts was first enacted, it is known that about 3,000 characters were enacted. Since many variant letters are included, the actual number may decrease. In addition, the Khitan Large Scripts is recognized as a syllable pinyin character with ideology, and in recent studies, letters with phonemic characteristics also appear. Since the estimate of the sound price of the Khitan Large Scripts is currently 240 characters, it is analyzed about 10% compared to the number of characters. In the future, it will be possible to analyze more characters through comparisons with the Epitaph, the history of Khitan, and comparisons with the Jurchen characters. In order to deepen the study of the Khitan Large Scripts, it is necessary to index the Khitan Large Scripts vocabulary. The analysis of the grammatical form of the Khitan Large Scripts is at the beginning. Although research on the grammatical form of the Khitan Small Script is still insufficient, some of the grammatical forms of the Khitan Small Script have been revealed. Compared to the Khitan Small Script, the Khitan Large Scripts has less research manpower and research data.The study of the Khitan characters originated from the Khitan Small Script, but by default, the Khitan Large Scripts are not easy to interpret because they are close to syllable characters rather than phoneme. It is also because of the characteristics of characters that are difficult to access without knowledge of Chinese characters. However, I believe that the day when the data related to the Khitan Large Scripts will be supplemented and the research on the Khitan Small Script is deepened, the day when the interpretation of the Khitan Large Scripts will take place will not be long.
