The rising prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) along with an escalating epidemic of obesity is jeopardizing our healthcare system and becomes a major public health problem worldwide. Although the etiology and molecular mechanisms of T2D remain unclear, postprandial hyperglycemia has been identified as major hallmarks for T2D and therefore clinical targets for anti-diabetic drugs. Hyperglycemia is primarily determined by intestinal metabolism of dietary carbohydrates as well as insulin-mediated glucose disposal in peripheral tissues. Evidence suggests that obesity is a major cause of hyperglycemia with the clinical presentation of chronic inflammation as well as altered expression of genes in adipose tissue. It is now well-recognized that either a lack of adipose tissue or an impairment of normal adipocyte functions drives insulin resistance and T2D in humans.
