This paper examines the conversion of Japanese classes, which previously centered on lectures and presentations, to the “learner-oriented” approach. In previous classes, professors focused only on functional language abilities related to business Japanese–namely, listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. By contrast, the classes in this semester introduced a team-based learning and a peer learning, which make students the main subjects of the class, so that they can simultaneously improve their social linguistic skills and social cultural abilities while fostering the four functional Japanese language abilities by cooperating, giving advice, and receiving feedback. Particularly in offline classes, students received clear guidelines for learning in advance, and flipped learning was used to provide Japanese explanations and related information. In a survey regarding the effectiveness of their classes where responses were rated on 5-point Likert scales. The average score for “improving presentation skills and improving Japanese writing skills” was 3.94, the average score for “improving confidence in interviews in Japanese” was 4.05, and the average score for “enhancing a job competency” was 3.66.
