In animation works directed by Hayao Miyazaki, sickness and its cure appear repeatedly. This is the key to find out his thought of ecology, or the coexistence of humans and nature, which is one of the essential themes in Miyazaki’s works. In other words the “sickness” was functioning as an essential metaphor. Some works depict how to deal with sickness through magic and science. In these cases, they are not in binary oppositions, but rather have a complementary relationship and have a common property as a method for deriving the power to cure sickness from nature. The “sickness” is, so to speak, a device that reminds the audience that the power to heal it exists on the side of nature. Moreover, the nature drawn by Miyazaki was like a primitive nature that dates back to the Jomon era, not only giving humanity the power of blessing, but also sometimes causing disasters and fears. We can point out Miyazaki thought this kind of nature have abundant power and such nature must be the root of Japanese identity. That is why, through describing sickness and its cure in his works, he always tried to shared his thoughts with the audience about his ideal duality of nature, contradictions and paradoxes, and tried to warn of the destruction and disappearance of such nature.
