This study deals with <紅髮레드메인一家>, the Korean version of ‘The Redmaynes’ by Eden Philpotts, which was retranslated into Korean to be included as a translation in the ‘Great World Detective Stories’ published in 1940 by Chokwangsa, Kyungsung, Chosun. <紅髮레드메인一家>, the Korean version of The Redmayne was retranslated by Kim Raesung. To our great interest, Kim Raesung did not translate the original ‘Redmanyne’ into Korean, but did retranslate <赤毛のレドメイン一家>, the Japanese version, into Korean. The Japanese version was translated in 1935 by Inoue Yoshio. In the course of retranslating Yohsinoin's Japanese edition into Korean, many peculiar things took place. This study seeks to probe the relations of retranslation with Korea's mass-culture of those days by making efforts to examine the followings in chronological order : 1. the situations comprising the processes of planning and publishing the Great World Detective Stories, the first Korean detective collection. 2. the peculiar things occurring in the course of retranslating English and Japanese into Korean. 3. the meanings of mistakes and changes made by the translator in the course of retranslating English and Japanese into Korean. While there were many mistakes and changes in the course of retranslating <赤毛のレドメイン一家> into Korean, the most import changes were mostly due to dropping, omitting, and skipping the original contents. In the course of translating English into Japanese, Japanese translator omitted and skipped something minor and miscellaneous such as the characters and the sceneries. However, in the course of retranslating Japanese into Korean, such major changes as omitting and skipping the major contents took place in the overall context of the original work to eventually distort the meaning of The Redmaynes. The unique features of Korean version is to omit the psychological descriptions and the character portrayals delineated by the original writer and, then, to translate the expressions and meanings relating especially to love affairs depicted in the original work into Korean as closely as possible. Kim Raesung, the translator, exhibited a similar pattern in the course of his own works written in Japanese into Korean. In this sense, the process of retranslating The Redmayne in terms of omitting, dropping, and skipping the original text is said to reflect the colonial Chosun's cultural environment in contrast to the Empire, Japan. In other words, this process shows us what Korean people and Chosun's mass culture of those days looked like.
