This paper aims to explore the meaning of ‘public’ and its constitutional conditions by looking at the point where Arendt meets with Diderot. Specificallly, we examine the theatrical dimension of action that appears in Arendt’s political action theory, and look at the point where the idea of human being as an actor shared by the people of the 18th century and Arendt’s action theory. By doing so, the goal of this paper is to find the ideological conditions for the possibility of the public realm being constructed. To this end, the text summarizes Arendt’s political action theory on the concept of appearance and mask(persona), and then Diderot’s Rameau’s Nephew and Paradox will be examined. Appearance is the concept that allows us to effectively see why Arendt’s action is fundamentally different from labour and work, while mask is a metaphorical device that shows what public means.
