In this study, the use and function of 'Sa’ in the conversation between universitystudent friends in Japanese were investigated. The functions of ‘Sa’ in the conversationwere classified into ‘Consent requirement’, ‘Strengthening’, ‘Attention–getting’, ‘Emotionexpression’. The results are summarized as follows. First, it can be seen that 'Sa' is used in a larger number of utterances and isused at a higher rate in female university students' conversation than in maleuniversity students 'conversation. In addition, it was confirmed that in both maleuniversity students 'conversation and female university students' conversation, thereis a common feature that 'Sa' functions mainly as ‘Attention–getting’. However, thereis a slight difference in the usage of function of ‘Sa’ between male and female inthat the ratio of ‘Strengthening’ is relatively higher in male university students'conversation than in female university students' conversation.. However, the resultsof this study can be regarded as an example to support the fact that the distinctionbetween male and female language is gradually weakening in modern Japanese society.
