"This paper deals with what advantages in terms of quantity and quality of expression there arewhen we learn the content of movie scripts. It is often said that full of practical expressions aremovies’ pride. However, Seo (2013) argues that what is practical for most people is notnecessarily practical in terms of language development. In order to activate languagedevelopment, we need expressions which allow us to find lexis within the expressions and laterto be able to generate many new expressions from them. In this experiment, five scenes fromDesperate Housewives, Season 3, Episode 9 were used. Subjects were four advanced levelfemale college students. They were asked to choose the expressions that they preferred(‘preferential expressions’ - PE) and expressions that were relevant to the movie content (ERMC)separately. The findings showed that ERMC were chosen more often than PE. It was also foundthat student C chose more ERMC than the others because student C faithfully followed the storyline. The others were more likely to choose culturally related, metaphoric and idiomaticexpressions, indicating that their focus was more on language than on the movie contents. It issuggested that student C’s orientation was advantageous, leading to more improved languagedevelopment."
