The main purpose of this article is to explore how Nabokov use Dostoevsky’s motifs in his novel Despair. In Lectures on Russian Literature Nabokov says that he does not admire Dostoevsky"s lack of taste and his monotonous dealings with persons suffering. From Nabokov"s point of view, Dostoevsky is not a great writer, but a prophet who longs for a religious salvation through his novels. While Dostoevsky may be a great seeker of truth, or a genius who studies mental and morbid conditions of human beings, he cannot be a great writer in the sense of Tolstoy, Pushkin, or Chekhov. Nabokov criticized that Dostoevsky"s well-known novel Crime and Punishment is mere a mediocre mystery novel with no artistic merits. He argues that the measure of a writer"s true genius must be approached in terms of how artistically original the world he has created is. Nevertheless, it is also true that there are more influences of Dostoevsky than any other Russian classic writers" in plots and character depictions of Nabokov"s novels. In Nabokov’s novels, Dostoevsky"s motifs are used in many aspects, such as the appearance of an alter ego, which can be said to be Dostoevsky"s main themes, an obsession to another self, and a murder that takes place for metaphysical reasons.
Despair is more closely related to Dostoevsky"s works than any other Nabokov"s work. In particular, Dostoevsky"s The Double, Crime and Punishment and The Possessed served as decisive texts for Nabokov‘s novel in the process of exploring the human consciousness. However, there is a crucial difference in their literary achievement. Though in Dostoevsky"s novels crimes are meticulously prepared and committed, the writer"s ultimate goal is to prove the process of the spiritual renewal after the crime. However, Nabokov abhors the use of art as a tool for religion and philosophy. For him, art should function as art itself. In Despair, the story does not focus on the process of German"s crime, but his writing based on memory. According to Nabokov"s explanation, this process itself has a meaning of creating an artist. German"s attempt to become a creative artist finally ends in failure. Just his crime was not perfect, so his writing was not perfect in aesthetical meaning either. For that reason, the title of this novel is bound to be Despair.
