본 논문은 근대의 계몽적 경험한 한국 사회 내에서 이루어지는 광범위한 점복 행위와 그에 대한 모순적 시선을 포착하여, 근대성의 가치를 강박적으로 규범화〮내면화해온 한국 사회에서 한때 점복을 지칭했던 미신 개념의 변화와 의미를 통시적으로 살펴보고, 아울러 고려기에서 현재에 이르는 점복의 양상과 의미를 분석한다. 미신 담론이 탄생하기 전까지, 생활 세계에서는 대체로 점복 행위가 진지하나 행위로서 받아들여졌다. 체계 세계 내에서는 점복에 대한 부정적 담론이나 개인적 태도가 발견되기도 하였으나 이것이 곧 점복에 대한 정치적 배척으로 이어지지 않았다. 그러나 일제의 통피와 근대화에 대한 지식인이 열망이 맞물려, 계몽적 미신 담론이 탄생하면서, 점복은 체계 세계로부터 박탈된다. 이 담론은 민속 세계로 하강했으나, 여전히 점복은 지속한다. 이후 미실 개념은 상습적으로 언론에서 선전되었고 점ㅊ차 하나의 상징어로서 가능하게 되면서 일반화와 매너리즘을 겪는다. 그러다 1960~70년대 근대화 운동의 과정에서 계몽적 미신 개념이 부활하고, 어느 정도의 경제적 성공과 함께 근대성의 규범은 규범화된다. 1990년대 말에는 미신 담론이 표면적으로 사라진다. 그러나 이는 잔존으로서 남아 현재 생활 세계 전반의 점복 의미와 미신 개념의 인식에 영향을 미친다. 그러나 현재 미신 개념은 그 경계가 무너지고, 계명적 의미를 박탈한 의미로 수용되기도 한다. 또한, 현재 점복은 오로지 맹목적 선관계적 믿음으로만 지탱되지 않고 근대성과 새롭게 상호작용하며 새로운 재주술화를 보여준다. 이는 민속의 현대화와 현대성의 민속화, 그리고 체계와 민속의 공존을 보여주는 것이기도 하다. 이는 미신 담론 이전에 존재했던 점복에 대한 양면적 태도와는 또 다르다. 현재의 양상은, 역사적으로 처절하게 강박적으로 내면화했던 근대성의 굴레에서 벗어는 해방적 성격과 과거 선관계적 사고체계를 이 근대성과의 관계에서 재조명하는 것이기 때문이다.
This study pays attention to two aspects of divination in current Korea, which has been through enlightening modernization, focusing the two-sided phenomenon of divination, First, the meaning of divination based on supernatural oriented pre-empirical mentality(Levi Bruhl, a kind of magical thinking or enchanted mentality), co-existing with the virtue of modern ‘rationality’(M. Weber). The expression, ‘two-sided phenomenon’ of divination means co-existence of negative attitude about divination, considering it irrational, especially in korea, as Misin and increasing demand of divination. Second, it focus on the relations between divination, a concept ‘superstition’, and historic change of their meaning, analyzing cultural and microscopic meaning people give to divination. The Misin discourse was born in modern enlightenment era, late Chosen dynasty, engaged with colonized state by Japan and desire for modernization, regarded same as power of the nation. From then, rationality based on modern scientific thinking system took its power(hegemony), defining things as Misin and eliminating divination. Even now, there still exists pas concept superstition of enlightement. As a result, cultural meaning of divination has changing depending on a mentalty of the society, especially on that of system-world. Before tha birth of Misin discourse, in both system-world and folk-world, divination seemed to have been considered trustworthy and had its power There was still negative discourse about divination at that time, but that didn’t mean political rejection. However, as national enlightening discourse and Japanese colonial era came, the concept “Misin” was born and divination lost its world. This political discourse descended to folk-world but divination still existed and interacted with people in folk-world. It implies that the independent domain folk-world rules exsists apart from power of system-world’s discourse. After the birth of the concept, “Misin” discourse was habitualy propagandized through the press and media, and the word got to function as a sylbol of irrationality, going through its generalization and mannerism in use. But, the original meaning of the concept re-sparked in 1960~70’s government-led modernization and through achieving economic growth, which was one of the most important goal of modernization, modernity became internalized, which has brought even now. After, The the concept seemed to disappear in system-world. But the concept Misinl remains in folk-world. At the same time, it seems to be in process of going through semantic discordance. In addition to its original meaning in context of enlightenment, the concept is newly regarded as a belief itself, Jinx or certain scenery or image of the childhood. Also, Divination isn’t sustained not only by enchanted mentality but also by scientific thinking based on modern intellectualism(M. Weber) and some religious beliefs etc. These mentalities, which were separated in the name of the mordernization, compete and inter-cross each other, creating complicated, multiple meanings toward divination showing new perspectives of re-enchantment. This re-enchantment is not same as enchantment. Current divination operates its complex meaning on conflicts between a modernity, which was obsessively internalized and A modernity which is a national myth itself or positive virtue.
