‘Korean painting’ at the moment adopts various materials and techniques in addition to its traditional mediums-paper, brush, and ink-, and transforms traditional styles freely, thus the individual features of each artist stand out, which follows the tendency of contemporary art in general. This article aims to further the study on this issue by focusing on the works of three artists who have been in the art world’s spotlight since the 2000s: Kim Jipyeong, Lee Eunsil, and Lee Jinju. Previous studies suggest the distinctive characteristics of Korean painting since the 2000s are the hybridity in its materials and techniques, and the relationship with Surrealism and Neo-pop in its expressive style and contents. However, these approaches limit the study to just superficially linking artworks with each other. Therefore, the article seeks to develop a new methodological approach on Korean painting in the 21st century, including the works of those three artists. To take a critical view on artworks, the idea of new formalism, which comes from object-oriented ontology (OOO) of Graham Harman, one of the leading advocates of the current prominent movement in the philosophical world, speculative realism, has been used as the analytic frame. In the end, this article attempts to develop a more realistic and effective understanding on contemporary ‘Korean painting’ which has been tangled in relationships formed outside the artworks, including its name and identity.
