Radiofrequency (rf) ion thrusters have been one of the most widely used propulsion systems for small satellites and spacecraft where radiofrequency power was utilized through a rf coil to ionize the propellant gas inside a discharge chamber. The numerical study is an effective way to investigate the physical characteristics of the inductively coupled plasma since the spatial distributions of some key parameters of the plasma could not be simply investigated with experimental methods. A 2-D axisymmetric fluid simulation of the non-equilibrium weakly ionized plasma of the conical shape rf ion thruster was performed. Design parameters such as chamber shape and rf coil configurations as well as operating parameters, i.e., operating frequency and applied power were investigated to analyze the effects on key plasma properties like electron density, electron temperature, and deposited power. The thruster performance was also considered by studying the surface where it makes contact with the grid system. The results suggest that the chamber in conical shape might lower the plasma density but can have better performance than the cylindrical shape. The plasma density and electron density increase with applied power while the operating frequency change does not affect these parameters significantly.
