This paper targeted Taiwanese nationalism, which grew into mainstream nationalism in Taiwan after democratization and had a great influence on the division and integration of cross-strait relations. This paper understands the historical process and characteristics of Taiwanese nationalism, analyzes the trend of Taiwanese nationalism through the results of opinion polls, and analyzes the future development direction and impact on cross-strait relations. After democratization, Taiwanese nationalism rose with the core of ‘Taiwanese identity’ and ‘Taiwan independence’, resisting the Kuomintang regime of the Republic of China. After that, as the regime changed, it grew further against the People’s Republic of China. Taiwanese nationalism has been closely related to Taiwan’s party and election and has changed according to the transition of the regime, and its character has been different, claiming different contents at each historical stage. The results of the trend of Taiwanese nationalism analyzed using Taiwanese identity and position on unification and independence as indicators were as follows. First, Taiwanese nationalism expanded not only when the Democratic Progressive Party but also the Kuomintang came to power. In other words, it was not proportional to the tendencies of the ruling party. Second, Taiwanese nationalism has formed a significant relationship with Taiwanese identity. Third, the Taiwanese identity has become stronger, but the increase in Taiwan’s independence approval rating has been limited. Fourth, in Taiwan, there was a pluralism phenomenon in which Taiwanese nationalism and Chinese nationalism mutually influenced and coexisted. Fifth, Taiwanese nationalism exists and has become a core nationalism leading Taiwan society. In conclusion, in order for any political party to take power in Taiwan, a policy that reflects the trend of public opinion of Taiwanese nationalism must be established. And the greater China’s pressure on Taiwan, the greater Taiwan nationalism will be. Taiwanese nationalism aims for national identity with the core of ‘value’ and ‘system’, which are differentiated from China, so cross-strait relations will remain tense in the future.
