In the heroic narratives of vast grasslands, horses often appear as a result of the strong cultural recognition of them among natives. In these epics, horses are depicted as the heroes’ companions, staying with them as equals through thick and thin—since people in the grasslands are nomads, whose lives are dependent on grazing horses, such a depiction is an ensuing cultural phenomenon. Meanwhile, horses appear as well in the heroic narratives of the Oroqen people in the forests of Greater Khingan and Lesser Khingan; the horse in 〈Hero Gepaqian〉 partners the hero likewise to those in the narratives of the grasslands. Yet the former is fundamentally different from the latter in terms of the portrayal of the animal; while the horse in a grassland narrative plays a role in reinforcing the protagonist’s heroism, in 〈영Hero Gepaqian〉, it guides the hero and sacrifices for him in the course of nourishing his heroism. Unlike grasslands, the living condition of the forests is relatively poor for a horse to grow efficiently—it is not feasible to graze a large number of horses. Nevertheless, the cultural recognition of horses among the Oroqens is considerably significant. In this essay, the basis and characteristics of such a cultural recognition are to be explored with regard to the horse imagery found in 〈Hero Gepaqian〉.
